⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: IV/Thomas Arclight
Age: 17
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL
Canon Point: Episode 57

Background: Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia link; as per usual, there's a heavy usage of dub names in the article, but I'll be using the Japanese.

Personality:
It's simplest to say that IV's personality is hardly what it seems. One moment he acts one way, and another moment, he's different depending on to whom he's speaking to and what the situation is like, but he's driven by the same thing.

What most people get to see of him is the same personality that he's famous for, which is him being kind and gentle, always willing to give his fans attention, usually in the form of compliments (during duels) and autographs, claiming that 'fanservice' is his motto, which in his case is just a matter of giving his fans the attention they ask for. He always wears a smile and comes off as noble, slow-tempered and well-mannered when he's like this, but in some cases it becomes clear that it's only an act. This side of him is a result of needing some sort of advantage over people, a cry for attention (seeing as he gets as much attention as he gives) and a desperate need for validation.

The side of him that comes out when he isn't playing nice is much more abrasive, cruel and quick to anger. He snaps at everyone, including his family, and he in general just seems very angry. That isn't to say he doesn't care about his family, because he truly does. He simply has a difficult time in showing it, and sometimes chooses not to if it means showing that he has no weakness. He's particularly fond of his younger brother and worries more about him than anyone else, though he has a certain affection for his older brother as well.

IV takes joy in the pain of others, often wanting others to suffer as he has, even if the sort of pain he inflicts on people isn't what he himself has been put through. Usually this manifests in the way he duels. Number 15: Gimmick Puppet - Giant Killer's effect is the ability to destroy an opponent's monster and give his opponent damage equal to that monster's Attack, and he abuses the effect immensely, referring to it as his 'true fanservice'. Beyond that though, if his opponent's Life Points reach zero by the time he's done abusing his monster's effect, he still attacks them directly and takes great joy out of seeing them suffer at his hands. And if something stops him from having his way in a duel, he gets frustrated that things aren't going his way, and claims that his fanservice is ruined and attempts to try to 'show it' again by fighting back harder.

IV also has a tendency to be over-dramatic, typically just to show off more than anything else and capture more attention from others. He tries to make himself seem like he's important, like he's actually worth something, so he acts full of himself more often than not. He's impatient, he's crude, and he's overall, to put it simply, an asshole. But why does he come off that way?

It's to hide his insecurities at the very core of his being.

As a child, Thomas was the kind of kid that would tease his younger brother, Michael, and get a bit jealous when Michael would get something from their father that Thomas himself didn't. And with their older brother, Christopher, being the one that took after their father the most (in both appearance and interests such as science), Thomas ended up getting overlooked in favor of his other two brothers. Their mother wasn't around by the time Michael was part of the family, so it was just their father taking care of three kids on his own, which meant a lack of decent parenting at any point of his childhood, and with his selfish, attention-seeking nature part of him since birth, it didn't bode well for his development growing up.

By the time he was twelve years old, their father disappeared and while Chris was old enough to take care of himself, he wasn't old enough to take care of Thomas and Michael, and they ended up sent to an orphanage to stay, which presumably didn't help matters at all in Thomas' case. He didn't know how to be a good older brother and suddenly he had to make sure that himself and Michael were taken care of in a whole new place with other kids that Thomas didn't know and probably didn't like, so there was a struggle there, especially with still being so young.

Once they were pulled out of the orphanage upon their father's... somewhat return, it was then that the family took on pseudonyms. Michael took on III, Thomas took on IV and Christopher took on V. However, IV ended up quickly growing a certain attachment to the number 4 (he gets offended at some point that Number 4 is a Number he isn't using and at the fact that it's a jellyfish), and likely as a coping mechanism.

Why? To help himself differentiate from Thomas and IV - his father, going by Tron now, had been instructing IV to do a lot of things, and all because IV wanted to find a way to make his father proud, find some way to make sure that Tron would even give him some sort of compliment, IV carried out the acts without a second thought to how cruel they were. The person that he became was no longer Thomas Arclight, someone that had been selfish, but innocent. Instead, he was simply IV, a two-faced teen that will do almost anything he's told, no matter how severe, failing to think of the consequences until it's almost too late.

But most of the things he did that his father asked of him, he would do when no one else could see. IV built a name for himself, made himself a famous professional duelist, and that's where his gentle persona comes into play. He tricks others into thinking he's sweet and kind when all he really wants to do is pull the strings and have control over something, since he clearly has no control over his life. There's a bit of irony to be had in his deck archetype, being puppet-based, when in the end IV was the puppet being controlled by his father.

Though, everything he does puts a strain on his mental state and he occasionally has moments where he'll suddenly burst into laughter like he's lost his mind. He laughs at others, taunts them for caring so much about their family despite having shown that he cares about his own. He sometimes has complete breakdowns when things are suddenly revealed to him that had remained hidden. He has a tendency to speak before thinking, which is why things remain hidden from him regarding certain plans for revenge, such as when he was instructed to duel Rio Kamishiro but was never told that one of his cards was rigged to catch the field on fire to harm and potentially kill her (though she ended up in a coma, thanks to him managing to be a decent human being and saving her life). But other things, like the careful placement of his cards so they would fall over right before a tournament match against Ryouga Kamishiro, all so Ryouga could be accused of cheating and lose the final match that won IV the tournament and brought shame to Ryouga's name? That, he was fully aware of and did willingly, and even beyond that, he continued to taunt and tease Ryouga about what happened to his sister.

He likes to think he's in control of others, saying just the right things to get the reactions he wants out of people, but the truth is that Tron controls him and is capable of doing the exact same thing to IV. All it takes is a few carefully placed words about how Tron feels about him to set IV off in a rage, regardless of whether they're from Tron himself or someone else. All in all, he has abandonment issues abound, issues revolving around his father, and even as III, IV and V, he still deals with the idea that III and V are better sons than himself, and it's a struggle he deals with quite often.

And while this doesn't necessarily pertain to the canon point I'm taking IV from, he is capable of wanting to become a better person as well as feel remorse for his past transgressions. He even manages to be less of an asshole than previously, but he's still rather full of himself and retains his flair for the dramatic, no longer attempting to use that gentle persona he used to deceive others previously.

Abilities:
Barian Crest - The Barian crests are sort of conduits to allow humans (the Arclights) the ability to use some Barian powers. When their father had disappeared and come back in the form of a child, he brought with him Barian powers in the form of a crest, and shared those powers with his sons to help him exact his revenge. IV's specifically is on his right hand, purple in color and resembles lightning/fire, likely an indicator of his personality as a whole. However, this crest doesn't appear unless he's using the power or he wills it to be. His crest is also a direct link to his soul - if he loses a duel while using any of his Numbers, his soul because exhausted and he'll go into a comatose state. The abilities listed below are all possible due to this crest.

Portals - IV can open Overlay Networks (an important part of dueling in ZEXAL in which players must 'open' Overlay Networks in order to summon their Xyz Monsters - it's mostly a flashy game mechanic during the duels, but with Barians and Astral beings, it's a whole other story), which then dematerializes its owner or another crest owner from one place and manifests them to another place, much like a portal. It is unknown if other people that aren't Barians/Astral beings or do not have some kind of Barian/Astral power within them are able to use these portals, but it's likely impossible.

Protection - If someone has an ability that allows them to take Numbers cards away from IV, the crest will protect him and his cards, deeming it impossible to take them. However, if a Sphere Field is active (a special arena made of a giant ball of energy that simulates the parallel worlds that either 'encases' Numbers cards or grants various abilities to the one that activates it), the crest can't protect IV's Numbers.

Dueling

D-Gazer Tattoo - D-Gazers are what most people on Earth use as a means to view a duel via the linked Augmented Reality system. However, the Barian crest allows IV to be able to duel without using one, and instead creates a purple tattoo over his left eye. It also changes his eye color from magenta to blue.

Number Resistance - The crest allows IV to resist the temptation to give into his deepest desires that the Numbers impose on most people when they're held. Because of this, IV is able to hold a few very powerful Numbers without worrying about having his control of himself taken from him.

Others - IV is able to disappear on a whim in a gust of wind - it's unexplained exactly how, but it's easy to assume that it's just a matter of thinking of a nearby place (within 200 yards) to 'teleport' to, and it seems to be used as a means of a flashy escape far enough to either stay out of sight or make a portal for a longer distance travel.

Third Person Sample:
What kind of crap was this?

IV, already having been in a sour mood as it was, glanced around at the strange surroundings - going from a field of augmented reality magma to something so... scrambled between forestry and what, steampunk? It's a bit of a shock, but more importantly, an unwanted interruption. He had to take down Ryouga in this duel, he had to damn well prove himself to his father, and he sure as hell wasn't going to let some weird shit like this get in his way of that. What did Tron do, interrupt the duel by portaling him somewhere? No, he would've been enjoying watching him and Ryouga go at it too much to interrupt it, so that's out of the question.

Was it some weird thing to do with his crest that he wasn't aware of? Glancing down at his right hand, IV focused on the power flowing through him, watching the crest light up on his hand. Stupid fucking thing. He couldn't even teleport anywhere either, not until he knew where the hell he was and could get an idea of the setup of the place. Though he would easily just prefer to figure out a way out than deal with all of that.

So caught up in this frustration and confusion and outright anger, specifically towards Ryouga and Tron, he didn't even realize until moments later just what those emotions were doing to the world around him, the ground cracking at his feet, until he felt his feet shift a little, and he let out a startled yell as he jumped back away from it, watching as with each step backwards he took, it looked as if he were breaking the ground with just his steps. "What the hell..?!" he exclaimed, backing into a wall only to feel it warp behind him, causing him to stumble forward before he took off into a sprint, away from anything but trees. At the very least, his mind was starting to veer away from his anger and focus more on his confusion, but it wasn't as if that made what was happening around him any better.

Once he was able to settle down, he leaned over, hands pressed against his knees as he worked on catching his breath, mind... mostly clear at that point (finally). So alright, this place was going to force him to deal with some really weird shit and once it occurred to him that it was going to be like that, IV took a deep breath and felt his throat clench up as he crouched down and ran both of his hands through his hair, staring at the ground in disbelief. Not only was he in a place he didn't know without a single person he knew in sight (that he was aware of), but now there was awful things happening all around him like he was a walking bad luck charm. With a heavy sigh, IV shifted his hands, pressing this thumbs against the inner corners of his eyes to keep his eyes dry, and he shook his head.

"I'm so screwed."

CHILDHOOD

BORN to Trevor and Christine Kingston on August 17th, Alexander is an only child and often acts like it, too. Desiring the limelight even from a young age, he'd often pose for pictures without hesitation and eagerly butt himself into the conversations of others, even when he was still too young to form proper words. Though, he'd always managed to charm the hearts of women that would fawn over the son of their friends, and he had learned quickly that he could use it to his advantage, whether it be getting some toy he wanted or just getting a kiss on the cheek from an especially pretty little girl. He was considered 'intelligent', but he was just more mischievous than anything and knew how to work people to his advantage.

This behavior continued on as he got older and entered school; it often got him into trouble with his teachers and he rarely was able to charm his way out of those situations. Alexander had a certain fondness for getting the other kids to do things for him, finding their weaknesses and exploiting them for typically innocent things, like sharpening his pencil for him or giving him their glitter when everyone was using the color he wanted for a project. It reached a point with his teachers though that they seemed to have extra-sensitive hearing for specifically when he spoke, so any deal he'd try to strike would be heard and he'd get his few warnings before, without fail, his parents would be called in for a meeting.

"Boys will be boys" was an excuse they used at first, but as he got older - nine, ten, eleven years old - the disappointment Trevor showed was clear. Christine had attempted to be a little more understanding, but soon enough, Alexander wasn't quite capable of using his smile so he could get out of it.

Though he often got himself into trouble because of his 'charm', he had begun to fight with his parents around the time of his 12th birthday. They weren't ever anything serious, mostly just him protesting about picking up his clothes after getting dressed or not cleaning his hair out of the sink when he'd messily run a comb through it in the mornings. It had always been little things, and as time passed, it happened more frequently, lashing out because he wasn't able to get the same attention he used to. As much as he loved his parents, they could be infuriating with how much they were limiting him at times.

The eve of January 11th following his 12th birthday, the Kingston family had been out to watch a movie and have a bit of a late dinner. However, as their movie ended and it grew close to 9pm, a heavy snowstorm kicked up (heavier than they had expected when they checked the weather earlier that day) and they had decided it would be best to go home and they would just cook instead, let Alexander stay up a little, seeing as it would likely cause an hour or two delay for school Monday morning, then put him to bed. Though, as they drove, the snow fell harder and the roads were slick, the salt trucks and plows not able to work quickly enough to keep the roads as safe as possible. With a surly Alexander in the backseat begrudgingly buckling his seatbelt at his father's warning, the car slid a few times on the roads as Trevor maneuvered the curves in the highway, trying to remain on high alert so he could stay safe.

But sometimes, even the safest of drivers can still get into an accident in nasty weather, and while no one could tell which car was the first to slide too far, eventually a multiple-car accident had graced the freeway with deaths and injuries all around. Among the casualties were Trevor and Christine Kingston, as well as the unnamed, unborn child that Christine had been carrying; Alexander survived, as their car had been hit head-on.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

AFTER spending a few weeks in the hospital to ensure that Alexander's injuries were minimal, he'd been sent back to school with nothing more than a bandage on his face to remain for at least another week, a gash over his right eye where glass had shattered and cut him where it later became a permanent scar.

A lot more than that changed about Alexander, however. Though he blocked out the accident for the most part, some things always struck him - he was 12 when it happened, and 1+2=3, and the date was 1/11 and that adds up to 3 as well. When he would find himself drifting too far into the memories of the accident immediately after, his schoolwork was often littered with different things that turned out to be the number 3. Someone could speak a sentence with nine words and he'd count them out, divide 9 by 3 to find that it was divisible by 3 three times. It became an obsession, and sometimes he needed to take his mind off of it.

He started up guitar as a way to not only feed his desire to be the center of attention, but to serve as a distraction from the way his thoughts would often run. Out of all of his different coping mechanisms, learning to play had easily been the healthiest, even if it was so he could also get the attention he could no longer receive from his parents. He could receive praise and applause, and it caused him to get back into the act of charming the wits out of anyone to get what he wanted from them.

Among his other ways of dealing with things was his obsessive need to make sure that one of the rooms in his house was kept perfectly clean; it was the room that had been prepared for his little sibling, and he made it a habit to go into the room every day, though as he grew older, it waned into three times a week but would never be any less. Sometimes he would just go to dust off surfaces, remove cobwebs, and keep the room in pristine shape. Other times, he would go to talk, the image of the infant he would see being nothing more than his own imagination. He had named the child after a while, and he liked the idea of having a little sister to spoil as much as he had been - he could have turned himself around after some time (he was more than aware that he would be selfish about another child entering the household to start), become a decent role model for her, and want nothing more than to protect her. So every few days by the time he was nearing his 15th birthday, he would walk into the room and say "Who is Vanessa's number one fan?"

After all, if he didn't pretend at least one of his family members were actually around, then the survivor's guilt would eat him alive.

Alexander progressed through middle school managing to make girls swoon but, realizing it wasn't quite enough, started going after the boys as well; he quickly learned which were more open to his advances by looking for simple signs as he observed them. It reached that point with girls as well, some thinking they were too good for him, so he watch and wait to see if they would fall to him easily or not.

HIGH SCHOOL

THROUGH high school, Alexander's ways of getting attention expanded. Instead of working towards simple things like copying homework, he began to explore things a bit more on the sexual side once he turned 15. He was a year into high school already and it was the perfect opportunity to start giving in to his more sexual thoughts, he felt. Others were as well, and if he wanted to be on top, he had to follow suit and push his way through the herd of sheep so he could be the shepherd of the student body.

He didn't necessarily get into trouble with the teachers, but definitely with other students - sleeping with someone's girlfriend, paying other students to get revenge on someone for him so he doesn't have to dirty his hands (it was rare, but it happened). He worked just hard enough to get slightly above average grades, though he often procrastinated on his work in favor of having his hands all over the squeeze of the night instead of his pencil and papers.

It was rare at that point for his advances to be turned down. He'd always been a bit of a handsome child, but due to puberty, he'd become eyecandy for all of the girls at the school (and sometimes, he'd catch a few glances from guys as well and pursue them quicker) whether he liked it or not. Though, as he neared his 17th birthday, he'd grown tired of giving attention to every person that wanted him. As entertaining as being the school's playboy could be, as much as he could get out of it and feed off of all of that attention, he realized he didn't want it forever.

But he still keeps up with the facade, even if he's growing bored of it - the way he sees it, if he can find someone that's worth more than a night of his time, be it someone that's just a friend or otherwise, he'll drop it. Until then, he has plans to keep up the act until he graduates. And to help with his 'acting' skills, he's definitely a drama geek, charming his way into roles like it's nobody's business. He's got this.

(There are probably a lot of holes in this but I'll fill those in as I think of them. :x)
